One of the goals of Vienna Reviews is to provide a platform for artists and to propagate different, non-commercial oriented news about Austria, to help the positive Picture of Austria in the World. When Vienna Review got in contact with the work of the young russian artist Yulia Linyaeva, (born in the polar Town of Norilsk and now living and working near Moscow ) we learned a lot about the foreign view of Austria.

Vienna Review organized already several exhibitions in Vienna for other artists and so we came to the decision, to invite Yulia Linyaeva to present her impressive photography work to viennese people and at the same time to learn about Austria.

After long struggles with the official system, not only the Exhibition of Ms. Linyaeva was opening

successfully in August 7th , also we were proud to welcome Ms. Linyaeva, arriving at Vienna Airport at end of August, for a tour through Austria and its neighbouring countries sponsored by Vienna Review.

Shortly after her return to russia we contacted Ms. Linyaeva again and interviewed her about her experiences and about herself as an Artist:

Vienna Review: Why are you interested exactly in photography? What do you like most in this type of art? What inspires you, helps your creativity to develop especially in photography?

Yulia Linyaeva: I’ve tried myself in painting, applied arts, design – but all this brought me into photography. Because photography, its containing all of these, as I think, especially art-photography and there is much more space for search and self-expression.

Inspiration -all, probably, the world around me. Meeting interesting creative people, which are helping my development, new cities, new countries, new emotions and of couse modern technologies.

Vienna Review: What is preffered by you, pellicle or digital photo equipment? Why you have this prefereneces?

Yulia Linyaeva: I prefer the digital photography. I almost missed the epoch of pellicle pictures and  so don’t have large experience of handling tape. But in my opinion digital picture gives greater space, more possibilities. There is not so much loss of money and , most important, in time, as with the use of tape. The amount of the turned out material is increased accordingly with the use of digital equipment, there is also more choice for the search of necessary suitable  shot and also for necessary quality. Also the process from tape tom the final pictures took away very much time and for example in reportage photos it’s due to timing, today nearly impossible to use tapes. But there is the charm and atmosphere in pellicle cameras. The safety and search of the best moment, because of narrow  amount of shots.

Vienna Review: Which cameras and equipment you used?

Yulia Linyaeva: I used Russian camera Zenit 312-M. With this camera I had my first successful and unsuccessfull shots, started the beginning of my creative searches and interest of photography.

Vienna Review: What genre in  photography is your preferred one? Why?

Yulia Linyaeva: I am not the photographer fixed on one genre. I prefer to do portraits, if possible from children. Children are a inexhaustible source of inspiration and possibilities, their mood and emotions changes every minute, at one time it is possible to do a few different states of child, challenging is also that quickness in the changing of mood. Im also interesting in art photography, although taking portraits is more near for me as a genre, because it is interesting for me trying to capture the state of emotion, mood and humanity.

Vienna Review: What were your interests and specializations before you choose to concentrate on photography? Can you tell us why you found this genres tempting and why did you finally change away from them?

Yulia Linyaeva: My grandmother was an artist (painter), her paintings were a inspiration for me. I always wanted to draw and I did draw much. My start of studying art did begin in an art specialized school, after school I studied in Norilsk Art college for applied arts in the speciality “Master -  wood and bone - Carver”. I did good and had  success and even thought to devote my life in it. But something was not enough. From 2002 until 2008, I was studying in Tula State University on specialization “Design”. I also worked as a Designer and for sometime tried to be engaged in Illustration. At the same time I started to be interested in photography and understood that I found myself exactly in this type of art. I am not away from design, because I often use it in art-photos, private orders, and sometimes I am drawing for myself, friends and rarely do I draw for sale.

Vienna Review: During the creation of illustrations, you prefers to use graphics editors or to draw by hand?

Yulia Linyaeva: I prefer both variants, usually I start to drawing on paper and afterwards continue processing it in graphic program. In our time we have many possibilities for computerizing and creation of image. I use the program Adobe Photoshop and a graphic tablet from Wacom, which gives a possibility to draw by hand straight on the computer. Sometimes I also scan the drawn image, if it is required by situation.

Vienna Review: What technique do you especially like to work in? What style in illustration you prefer?

Yulia Linyaeva: As technique - I like the most computer collage. Before I preferred the style of trash or babytrash, but now I stepped back from it, because i am developing my own style.

Vienna Review: You were in Austria in 2008, doing an exhibition on invitation by Vienna Review, which was well appreciated by visitors, what are the impressions you got from our country? What did you find interesting as a photographer?

Yulia Linyaeva: Yes, due to Vienna Review, i had a possibility to visit Austria and to become a bit acquainted with the culture of your country.  Austrians are very friendly, creative and interested in an art people. I was pleased to be accepted so friendly by Austrians and Impressions from your country is most positive. I liked for the most the atmosphere of Carinthia, the honoring of traditions and culture of Austria, is nowhere as present as exactly there. There is not such influence of the modern world, a quiet and silent place which inspires and induces to work.

Vienna Review: How perspective to work as a photographer and artist in Russia? Give please your estimation of the Russian photography.

Yulia Linyaeva: In Russia it is difficult to enter and develop in the market of Photography, because of the large amount of competitors. Russian Market is now beginning to form and therefore everything is a bit chaotic. But the development in Photography and Russian Design is moving fast and i think that in the nearer future Russia will be declaring in world market as a valued Competitor. At the moment photography, although, has due to little request and popularity, not very much prestige as an independent type of Art in Russia.

Vienna Review: Your plans for the future?

Yulia Linyaeva: Now i am in beginning of a long road, which i need to walk, to perfection and selfdevelopment, as a photographer.

Vienna review thanks Ms. Linyaeva for her visit and  we hope to see her amibitious and highly creative work soon again in Austria!
